Leaving you

You’re comfortable saying not a thing
When we’re home just hanging out
But you know the right things to say
When we’re traveling from here to there

You cheer me up
When it seems the rest of the world
Wants to give up on me
And I can never get mad at you
When you fail because
It was probably my fault
To begin with

Wherever I go
You’re right there with me
And if for some reason
I must leave you behind
People wonder if things
Are okay between us
And I have to reassure them
That nothing is wrong–
You just couldn’t come along

We have been together for years
And I have looked forward to the
Time we spent together

Despite all this
I am not naive–
We can never be a family
So I’ll have to let you go
And hopefully you will
Mean as much to someone else
As you have meant to me

Tomorrow I’m taking you
To the motorcycle dealership
And see if they can help me
Find someone to buy you

But to honor you
I will save whatever money
I get from your sale
For an engagement ring
For that special someone
Waiting for me out there

I just hope I’m not too late
