Polaris

You are
The center
Of my known universe
The north star
By which I always
Find my way home
No matter
How lost I am

I can look up to you
And know how far I’ve come
And how far I’ve yet to travel
In the journey
That is my life

If only you knew
How much you mean to me
The brightest star
I’ve ever set my eyes upon

Fair trade

And I
Don’t have
Any funny stories
To share with you
About taking
The kids somewhere
Or hanging out
With my significant other–

So how can the discussion
Be considered an
Equal exchange of ideas?
How much will the tariffs be
If one party benefits
More so from the discussion
Than the other?

Midnight

Let me begin
By asking when
Should circumstances
Demand I give my all?

When I’m sure of myself?
Completed my prayers while knelt?
And passed through the most
Holiest of halls?

For everything I do
Draws from resources so few
It’s not easy
Being me

Once a deed has been done
My composure weighs a ton
It becomes a burden
Just to act civilly

So I must make haste
And flee the public space
Forgive my sudden departure
I haven’t been invited to the rapture
