I met you in kindergarten
And lacked the words to tell you
So I cried to get your attention

I met you in high school
And when I did tell you
You left the next day

I met you in college
But didn’t realize
It was really you
So it was me
Who decided to leave

I met you at my first job
And mistook you
For someone else
So I never said
A word to you at all–

Through the years
I’ve met you
Again and again
Unable to tell you
Who I am
How I am doing
What I am feeling

Then on my last day
As I write this
I look in the mirror
And realize
You have been there
For me all along
