Invasive species

When cozy feelings
Build their nest within the heart
I want to shoo them away
Before all welcomes they overstay
And make themselves at home
Disrupting my daily thoughts
Their chirps tweets and caws–
Maybes perhaps and oughts

Even with careful planning
Making the heart a quiet yet hostile place
Inhospitable and inimical
To any stray feeling looking for a home
They somehow find a way
To take a foothold
Laying eggs that hatch infatuation
Rearing fledglings for domestication
For taming a stoic heart
That longs to be left alone
After endgame
After endgame
After endgame
An infinite war
Fought by an old man
Who tires of
Punchdrunk
Skips of beat and
Grievous heartache
Ebbing and flowing
Within him

“Please make it stop”
