Whatever remains must be true

Before today
We’ve passed each other
A million times
Of them
Maybe ten thousand times
We actually made eye contact
Further still
We only said something to each other
A few thousand times
Of them we’ve had
A hundred or so conversations
Then even more so
Only a few dozen of our interactions
Resulted in lasting bonds
And of those
Only a single connection
We dared to make
Managed to last a lifetime

Next door stranger

And today I’ll allow myself
To savor you
To acknowledge
How your recent presence
In my obscure life
Gives me pause

I imagine a tomorrow
Different from today
Full of smiles and laughter
Tentative questions and honest answers
Beginnings and endings
Realizations revelations
Convergence of possibilities
Until we cannot escape
A fundamental truth
Cannot imagine any other world
Neither you nor me
Not you and me–
But us
Growing old
Under the gaze
Of billions of stars

Today I think I’ll allow myself
To feel human
Just this once

Pupil

The path staggers seven miles
Into the forgotten foothills
Ending at an abandoned church
What has been done here
Has always stayed here
Unapologetic lovers unable to
Contain their lust
Remorseless cultists inscribing
Blasphemous signs in blood
Ultraterrestrials remaking realities
UAPs piloted by bigfoots searching for mothmen
This is a haunted place undisturbed
Except by the most foolhardy
Until now–
Tonight I have dared to trespass
I need to break the seals
And release the despair the dread
That you have heroically kept at bay
With your signs and sigils
I’ve waited decades until I knew
Your defensive magic weakened enough
That a pupil of your arts could hack it
Smearing ink here tearing parchment there
An unholy combination unlocking
The locks that have protected humanity
Unlocked unsealed the horrors
Kept from the world twist my limbs
Break my bones shred my muscles
Screaming eyes watery until
Body rearranged lungs unable
No air vocal cords
Horrors escape
Church empty
Just me
It worth it

Forked

Today is wrong–
Before I left for work
You told me you loved me
And not to forget to
Pick up eggs on the way home
During my morning break
Our daughter texted me
That she made a new friend
After lunch
My boss said there’s enough
Money this year
That I can get a bonus–

Yesterday
I remember being broke
Living paycheck to paycheck
We never met because
I am no one
With only my thoughts
To keep me company
I am alone–

And somehow today
My struggles
My pain
Are gone
As if someone made
A revision to my life
Then rebooted it–

I should not be here
