Asking for too much

How can anyone love you?
You don’t jump into convos
About normal things
And when you’re thinking
You like to dwell deeply

How can anybody love you?
Your glory days are behind you
Times when you could’ve been
Seen as pretty or handsome
Are so far past that you are plain at best
Maybe you used to exercise
But now any muscle most likely jiggles
And you need to catch your breath
When on an escalator

How can anybody love you?
People don’t want to rely on you
And you stopped offering to help
When you realized how
Hard you made easy things seem
That you found yourself apologizing for
Mistakes more often than
Receiving thanks for getting things
Done right the first time

How can anybody love you?
Another’s politeness presses
Against your heart like all of Venus
And you end up falling for them
Unable to get back up
And when someone tries
To get to know you
You don’t know what to say
Because you’re thinking of someone else

How can anybody love you?
The things you like aren’t readily available
Not at the local grocery store
But in a boutique shop on an obscure lot
Your favorite content doesn’t start with once upon a time
It’s esoteric and more convoluted than Greco-Roman folklore

How can anybody love you?
You’re a nobody
Forgettable if first known
Regrettable if ever engaged with
You’re not where everybody is at
You prefer where no one ever is
You only belong enough because
You need to be here
Not because you want to be here
Not because you are wanted here

How can anybody love you?
You struggle to enjoy the moment
When the next one is always a second away
Tomorrow always seeks you out
Regardless of what you do today

How can anybody love you?
