Tied

I’m at a disadvantage
Whenever we meet
You can say whatever you want
And it’ll make sense to me
But I have to rehearse
The simplest things
Because I want to say it
As if that’s what I meant to say
You don’t know the power
You have over me
Where your gibberish
Sounds like a classical poem
And your craziest ideas
Make sense like to-do lists
Meanwhile my best thoughts
Take so much time to formulate
I cannot extemporize them and
Into spoken words they must slowly bake!
I wanted to tell you about my weekend
But could only mutter
“I did nothing of consequence as such”
While you regaled me about your talking dog
Your precocious son your burnt apple pie crust
Every uttered opinion of yours
So playfully polite while mine’s quite trite
And realizing my verbal ineptitude
I end up embarrassed contrite
I don’t know how you do it
Always leaving me tongue tied
When all I really want to tell you
What I truly feel
